Begoña Sunye De Terry Portfolio

This portfolio will be exploring different aspects of Art, Media and Design explored during my Foundation course.
PROJECT: NEW LEAF BRIEF

For this project I explored the RSA Student Design Awards 2020-21 (without competing in it) where I had to choose one of the RSA Design briefs. I chose the "a New Leaf" project brief as I am passionate about woodlands and producing sustainable furniture.
WHAT I INTEND

I Intend to design a furniture piece out of wood that brings awareness to lesser known timbers in Peru and through this bring a luring and intriguing aspect to its history and culture.

MINDMAP
My options for the furniture piece was between a dinning room table or a chair. Below one can find my initial brainstorm and a 15 minute thumbnail sketch-up

CHAIR DESIGN INSPIRED BY ANCIENT INCA RELICS SPECIFICALLY FROM TUMI DESIGNS  (drawn on Procreate)
SECOND IDEA: TABLE DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF THE PRACTICALITIES OF PRODUCT
FURTHER EXPLORATION OF IDEAS THROUGH 3D MAQUETTES
Through these two maquettes, I was able to visualize physically what the chair and table design would physically look like as well as see the practicalities and conveniences of each furniture piece.

CONTINUATION OF EXPLORATION FOR FINAL PIECE

By analysing all the aspects of both the chair and the table I decided that the furniture piece that would be most practical and a preference of mine for the final idea to be the table.  On the left is a collage of the timber and Tumi inspiration.
COMBINING THE WOOD TEXTURE AND MY DESIGN
Using Photoshop, I blended my Inca design with the Cedrelinga Cateniformis wood texture by manipulating the hue and saturation of both so they would blend uniformly.

FURTHER EXPLORATION: Isometric design of the table using isometric paper and Photoshop
In order to modernise the design I decided for the table legs to be made out of aluminium, in order to combine traditional wood furniture design with modern furniture design elements.

RESOLVED FURNITURE PRODUCT: DINING ROOM TABLE

HEADSPACE
For this project, "headspace", we were assigned to create a three-dimensional self-portrait. As I am interested in interior/architecture and product design I knew that the best material to work with would be corrugated card and foam core. I also made a mood board from Pinterest to gain ideas on how to create my 3D head and also watched youtube tutorials.

INITIAL IDEAS FOR MY 3D-SELF PORTRAIT

FINAL SKETCH
Above is my resolved sketch for this project. The concept for my project was; how in our minds through our thoughts we create a complete different reality and scenery's compared to the physical world. Hence from the drawing above, we can see how I divided this part of the head into floors with stairs and different compartmentalized spaces.

INITIAL STAGES OF MY 3D SELF-PORTRAIT
Secondary experimentation to create the head piece in a different way
As it was my first time using a glue gun, there was too much excess of it and it made the appearance of the 3D face unflattering. Thus, I thought it would be interesting to spray white paint onto the face. It also would imitate the appearance of white marble as found in traditional sculpture.
After spray painting the head sculpture white, I realized that this only emphasised the excess glue gun on different areas of the face. Hence, I decided to use the same card but use thinner pieces on the head to hide the excess glue. Nevertheless, I decided to leave the hair and eyes white as it helped show contrast between the face and hair.
FINAL PIECE
MAKING FURNITURE PIECES INSPIRED BY THE HEADSPACE PROJECT
After creating the 3D head sculpture we were told to draw 3 sketches, 7 minutes each of our 3D self-portrait from different perspectives and using different media such as pencils and biro pens or paints.

After drawing these sketches we were told to explore our initial sketches through our area of interest, in my case: product design.
IN DEPTH EXPLORATION OF BED SIDE TABLE SKETCH
Final Maquette Digital Painting

Further exploration of ideas: Thumbnail sketches for a light fixture
3D MAQUETTES OF ONE OF THE THUMBNAIL SKETCHES
EXPLORATION OF ONE THUMBNAIL THROUGH PENCIL SKETCHES
DEVELOPMENT OF FOURTH THUMBNAIL, ADDING COLOUR AND FABRICS DIGITALLY

FINAL PIECE DECISION BETWEEN THE BEDSIDE TABLE LAMP AND THE LIVING ROOM LAMP
After analyzing the practicalities of both products, I decided that the most practical, economical and sustainable option and my personal preference was the second option.

CREATING THE LIVING ROOM LAMP MAQUETTE

Initial experimentation to create the maquette with plasticine and cardboard.
Final piece: In the end I opted for wire and fabric to create my 3D Maquette
WORDS AND EMOTIONS PROJECT EXPRESSED THROUGH FINE ART: Different experimental sketches using various media: pens, colour pencils, charcoal, paints, mono-printing.
REMIX
PROCESS

Above is a mind map I made of the different ideas that popped up surrounding the project theme "Remix".

Exploring Fine Art further, I decided to remix two different artists together through one painting. The artists I chose were George Braque and Diego Velazquez.  I thought it would be interesting to remix both artists styles and techniques into one piece.
FINAL PIECE
For the resolved piece I decided to fuse my initial Menina pencil drawing into the piece, without changing the entire last composition of my previous image. Therefore, I decided to lower down the opacity of my initial sketch and blend it in the background; acting as a shadow of the original Menina.
LOCALE

Here  I explored Media through a an assigned brief "location" and the emotions that arose from it. Below we can see a mind map I made of the different ideas that popped up surrounding the project theme, which I wanted it to revolve around the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Thus, I began by taking a pictures using my phone of my bedroom at my Halls of Residence at night. It is at night when the room begins to exert a more clustered and compact feeling. I also took the picture in black and white as I believed it erased liveliness from the space, which was my intention to later explore with colour manipulation.
FINAL PIECE
Through these two images, I wanted to play  with colour and composition by adding more shapes with different colour gradients, e.g., blue and pink, in contrast to the red and black highlights.

SELF INITIATED WORK : Jewelry work
During lockdown I was able to push my creative skills further by making intricate jewelry designs through wire and shells, as I was able to go out into the beach and collect different types of shells and through this process push my creative skills further into more craft skills. This dedication to such designs also paved the way to my interest in product design which I am very intrigued and excited about.

Resolved Jewelry Pieces
Inspired by these pieces, I decided to create a small jewelry shop, inspired by nature and recycled beads.
Extra curricular work: Fine Art
During my time off I like to challenge my artistic skills even further by drawing subjects that I find challenging such as drawing human features; face and limbs. Below we can find examples of my work where I would draw images from Pinterest, using bic pens and different pencil widths and water colours.
